Mike Vrabel admits what fans already knew about the Patriots' free agency outlook

Finding Drake Maye an explosive top wide receiver option is unfortunately still a task at hand for the Patriots going into the 2026 offseason, and based on the list of players about to hit free agency, it's looking more and more like they won't be able to sign the caliber of talent needed to make the difference the roster requires.

For the most part, that sentiment has become the overwhelming view among Patriots analysts and fans, prompting many to suggest that a blockbuster trade for someone like AJ Brown or Brian Thomas Jr. will be the way to get it done.

But Mike Vrabel seems to think differently, although he does agree that the player they need won't be found in free agency. Instead, he cites the draft, and that might be where the Patriots decide to find their next top receiving option.

Mike Vrabel understands that the Patriots won't find their next WR1 in free agency this year

While speaking to reporters at the NFL Combine, the head coach acknowledged that this year's free agency class isn't what the Patriots are looking for and shared his belief that it will be the draft they'll focus on to fill that role.

"Well, yeah, I mean, they're not going to be there in free agency. But you have to try to draft them. think that's where a lot of them are. You develop them. Some of them develop and guys, the transition in that position from year one to year two, can be pretty special."

Hopefully, that doesn't rule out the possibility of trading a pick in this year's draft or even next year to add the kind of receiver they're looking for. That's likely to make the biggest impact on the roster, and there are a few players who remain in rumors suggesting they'll be available.

If they have the opportunity to trade for a guy like Brown or Thomas Jr., or maybe even DJ Moore or George Pickens, they can't let that pass them by.

Finding a true WR1 isn't easy, and most of those who have been in the league have already signed long-term extensions so that they won't be available any time soon. The Patriots have struggled to find that player in the draft since Bill Belichick's days, so there's not much optimism that will change, even under Mike Vrabel.

So that means a big-time trade might be the way to go. Luckily, Vrabel hasn't completely shut that idea down, and neither has Eliot Wolf.
