Patriots free agency mailbag: Diving into fans' biggest roster concerns

Although the most chaotic part of any NFL offseason hasn't begun yet, we are just a few days away from being bombarded with constant news regarding the Patriots and the rest of the league once the legal tampering window opens next Monday.

Then comes free agency, and each day will be flooded with reports from insiders dropping the latest signings, some of which will be significant, and hopefully that also includes the Patriots.

Because of that, and in an effort to interact with our readers at Musket Fire more, I will be experimenting with a weekly mailbag to those who follow me on Twitter/X, answering as many questions as I can that fellow Patriots fans might have.

This week, of course, surrounds the impending drama of free agency, with a mix of some draft talk in there, too. Since it's another crucial offseason for New England, expectations remain high that they pull off another homerun offseason to keep them on track for another Super Bowl appearance.

Answering some of the hottest questions Patriots' fans have ahead of free agency

"I've seen some suggesting that the Patriots should sell out for a guy like Trey Hendrickson, do you think giving his age And where the Patriots are roster-wise It's worth giving that kind of contract to?"
From Mike (@GrimaceBusiness)

This is such a tricky subject because the Patriots have long been missing a key pass rusher like Trey Hendrickson, but especially since they decided to trade Matthew Judon during the 2024 offseason.

But my immediate gut answer has me siding with you for a few reasons: his age, Mike Vrabel's vision for the roster, and the number of other big roster needs.

That doesn't necessarily mean I'm completely out on signing Hendrickson, but I'm not sure he would be my first choice, even more so since he's coming off a season plagued by multiple injuries.

They will need some clarity about his health before even entertaining the idea of signing him, and if they want to move forward, they should really consider their reasons behind moving on from Stefon Diggs and how that same logic could also apply to Hendrickson in a year or two.

"What are your thoughts on this Diggs move? Did you feel they were going to hold onto him? Do you think he didn't want to restructure his contract? I'm unhappy about it."
From Beth (@RdsxgirlB)

Initially, when the news broke that Stefon Diggs had been released, I was shocked and immediately concerned about the state of the receiving corps. Given how he played in 2025 and the leadership role he held, it felt like a smarter move to keep him around for another year.

It's crucial that Drake Maye has some continuity with his offense in the early stages of his career, so still having Diggs to throw to made a lot of sense. But reports have suggested the higher-ups wanted to renegotiate his contract, and Diggs wasn't interested, and they weren't thrilled about his $26+ million cap hit for the 2026 season.

Whether that's entirely accurate is something we'll likely never know the answer to, but it's likely they were concerned about his age, the kind of production they'd get out of him next season, and maybe even his pending court case.

"In your opinion, what's the leading storyline with the Pats right now?"
From Ed (@MrEd315)

It definitely feels like it's what they're going to do at wide receiver after releasing Stefon Diggs.

They continue to be highly connected to Alec Pierce, who made it clear what he's looking for in his next team and basically everything he mentioned described New England, and AJ Brown, which took a big hit after the Bills sent a second-rounder to the Bears for DJ Moore.

It wouldn't be surprising if their first big free agency move is signing/trading for a receiver, and I think that makes sense. It was a glaring weakness with Diggs on the roster, and even more now that he's not, so they should address it sooner rather than later.

"What would you do with pick 31? And as a follow up, what players in Free Agency would Sara target if you was the Patriots GM"
From Chris (@CGtheJediMaster)

It's so difficult to say ahead of free agency because I think that will dictate what their first-round pick should be. But they're fortunate that some of their biggest needs have deep classes, and given they're unlikely to go after a big-name pass rusher, it might be best to use No. 31 on one of the best of the incoming class.

That allows them to get a high-potential player at a much lower price, whom they can develop and make into a star as soon as possible. They'll need to add some veteran help, too, especially with K'Lavon Chaisson's future unclear, which makes a rookie an even better option.

As far as free agency goes, I'd like to see the Patriots pursue WR Alec Pierce, who feels like a tremendous fit for the kind of quarterback Drake Maye is; some offensive line help, maybe Jawaan Taylor and Brock Hoffman; and maybe even a tight end like Isaiah Likely.

"Everyone has talked about the bigger names that could interest the Patriots who do you see that is slightly under the radar that could prove to be a great signing in hindsight like a Chaissan or Tonga."
Thunder (@Castles_Burning)

The first name that comes to mind is Bobby Okereke, a linebacker I wrote about recently after the Giants cut him. I feel like he would be a great addition to the Patriots' defense.

He's not a name most people know, and he's not going to be a game-wrecker like fans might hope for, but he's incredibly productive on the field and known for being a leader in the locker room. The Patriots need all of that right now, and if they can find another good culture fit in Okereke, then I'm on board.

On the offensive side of the ball, tight end Chig Okonkwo, whom Mike Vrabel drafted to the Titans in 2022, could be a good player to pursue, particularly due to Austin Hooper's future in New England, which is up in the air.

They need a young tight end to pair with Hunter Henry, and although they'll likely target the position early in the draft, it's never a bad idea to bring in a productive veteran like Okonkwo, whose skillset would pair well with what the roster already has.

"Do you think the pats could sign Kwity Paye if they are unable to get one of the top guys like Mafe, Oweh, he's from ri so it'd be a homecoming and he's a great run defender played hurt last year good pass rusher as well. "
Zeke Blackrose (@BlackroseZ38217)

Kwity Paye is not a name that I've seen much on the Patriots' radar so far, but that doesn't mean he won't be once free agency begins next week.

He could be a suitable pass rusher if they miss out on some of the big-name targets, and he could be a solid mentor to a rookie defensive end that we can only assume the Patriots will pick in an early round.

He's maybe not the needle-mover fans would be hoping for, but we're not sure how things will pan out with K'Lavon Chaisson just yet, or how Harold Landry III will play in 2026 after having proper time to recover from his knee injury.

Paye could be a great depth piece, and he fits the kind of player Mike Vrabel wants on the team, so I don't see a reason they wouldn't inquire about bringing him to Foxboro.
